Refugee Unaccompanied Minors

In 1980, LSS/NCA expanded its commitment to provide social services in the Metro-DC area to include services to refugee unaccompanied minor youth--young people who entered the United States without parents or adult relatives.  Since that time, the Unaccompanied Minors Program has provided services for more than 350 refugee youth.

In addition to the normal stress of adolescence, refugee unaccompanied minors have very special problems and needs.  They have to deal with a myriad of emotions stemming from the ordeal of escape.  It is necessary to adjust to everything "American," including school, customs, family and friends.  The LSS/NCA minors program, with its cross-cultural expertise helps to ease the pain by:

bullet

supporting and maintaining a foster family placement

bullet

planning an educational program

bullet

assisting with family re-unification if possible

bullet

providing comfort, counsel and advise as they make transition to independent living.

Persons interested in providing foster care or other support for one of these special youth are encouraged to contact the Foster Care program director.
