Outreach and Support Specialist

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
•Maintain current knowledge of the U.S. Resettlement Program & all Refugee and Immigrant Services programs
• Maintain current knowledge of trainings offered at Montgomery College/Montgomery College Refugee Training Center
•Coordinate the Refugee Financial Literacy Project;
•Contact area employers through mailings, phone inquiries, person-to-person meetings, and formal presentations to provide them program information and to inquire about current and future job opportunities
• Develop relationships with area training providers and employers that allow for ongoing placement of TAP participants
• Coordinate with TAP Employment Advocates to match appropriate clients with opportunities
• Organize job fairs and mass hiring events
• Coordinate the Job Club, Job Corps and Job Coach Programs
• Coordinate with the EM to plan and implement luncheons, awards ceremonies, and other job development events
• Make formal presentations to area churches and civic organizations for the purpose of networking and employment development, including Human Resources associations and Chambers of Commerce
• Research job market trends to identify “hidden jobs”, “Green jobs” and untapped opportunities
• Conduct outreach to refugees and asylees for enrollment to LSS/NCA’s employment program
• Refer and coordinate with Resources Developer regarding individual Job Coaches matched with clients
• Assist in developing employment trainings and writing/updating client resumes and cover letters
• Maintain accurate record of all services provided
• Produce reports in a timely manner
• Work as part of the program team and participate in staff meetings and in-service trainings
• Other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in social work, human services, social services, business or related field;
or two years related experience and/or training;
Fluency in one or more of the following languages is a plus: French, Somali, Nepali, Farsi, or Burmese
Basic computer skills
Attention to detail and accuracy
Very strong verbal and written communication skills
Strong public speaking, presentation, and networking skills
Ability to work in a diverse environment

Case Advocate

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Maintain current knowledge of the U.S. Resettlement Program;
• Ensure all core services mandated through the Department of State Cooperative Agreement are provided within allocated timeframes;
o Greet arriving refugees at the airport and transport them to initial housing;
o Assist in securing housing for arriving refugee families. Ensure that housing is safe, sanitary, and affordable;
o Ensure that housing is fully furnished with all items mandated through Operational Guidance. Solicit, pick up and deliver items as appropriate;
o Ensure clients are provided appropriate seasonal clothing and food or food allowance; o Provide orientation;
o Evaluate clients through an intake and assessment process and develop a resettlement plan designed for self-sufficiency. Follow up with clients to ensure progression towards goals. Revisit the resettlement plan and adapt as necessary;
o Assist clients in applying for social security cards;
o Assist clients in applying for assistance from the Department of Social Services;
o Register children to school;
o Enroll clients to English as a Second Language classes. Follow up with clients to encourage their regular attendance;
o Refer clients to employment services. Follow up with clients and employment services to ensure job placement and retention;
o Ensure clients receive initial health screenings;
• Complete suitability determinations for minor cases;
• Provide extended case management and support services to clients enrolled in the Matching Grant program and Pubic Private Partnership;
• Contact area service providers through mailings, phone inquiries, and person-to-person meetings to provide them program information and to inquire about available services. Make referrals as appropriate;
• Assist eligible clients in the completion of Affidavits of Relationships and refugee interests;
• As appropriate, request and deliver checks;
• Assist in the collection of MG-5s;
• Complete all forms as required.
• Maintain accurate record of all services provided;
• Produce reports in a timely manner;
• Coordinate services with other area agencies;
• Work as part of the program team and participate in staff meetings and in-service trainings;
• Other duties as assigned.

Refugee/Immigrant | Northern Virginia

Internships

LSSNCA offers a variety of internship programs in all of our programs including Human Resources, Development, Foster Care and Refugee and Immigration Services.

Application Process
All positions are temporary and open for three sessions throughout the year (Winter/Spring; Summer; Fall). Interns must work a minimum of 20 hours per week. Most of the interships are unpaid, however, the posting will specify either way. The internship start and end dates are flexible according to your academic calendar, and the scheduled assignments within the various programs. A printable detail list of the available internships can be found in the "Downloads" section under the name of the Program sponsoring the internship.To be considered as a applicant a writing sample is required.

Teen Haven Retreat Intern

This internship is funded by ExxonMobil Corporation through the Summer Community Jobs Program.

Must be available for the week of July 12-16, including on-site participation at retreat.

Responsibilities:
• Arrange for special activities for the campers;
• Assist with staff training events;
• Organize and coordinate the acquisition of donations;
• Oversee the purchasing of supplies and their storage after camp;
• Communicate with staff, counselors, nurses and social workers throughout the planning process;
• Lead one or more activities with campers during the summer retreat.

Qualifications:
• Currently enrolled undergraduate student who will be returning to college full time in the fall of 2010;
• Passion for working in a human-service setting to support youth with special needs;
• Major course of study preferred: social work, public administration, sociology, education, recreation, liberal arts;
• Demonstrated skills in office etiquette and computer applications; strong writing and verbal abilities; must keep confidentiality of clients;
• Self-starter, motivated and cooperative work style;
• Must have clean police record and negative TB test.
