NORTHERN VIRGINIA COALITION OF CHURCHES

NOVACO began 7 years ago with a handful of churches and an idea:

To combine the efforts of Northern Virginia church volunteers with available Fairfax County services and offer victims of domestic abuse, a safe haven to live while they become self sufficient.

The program provides transitional housing to victims of domestic abuse and their families along with supportive services in four areas:

Childcare: Client families know their children are safe and secure.

Life Skills Classes: Clients who may not have been responsible before for the well being of their family can learn to cope as a one parent household.

Education & Job Training: In most cases, the single parent does not earn enough to keep the family above the poverty level.  NOVACO coordinates the family with all available Fairfax County Services to help them maintain their household, while offering the clients continued education or job training to increase their earning abilities in this job market.

Mentoring: Sponsoring church families are partnered with Client families to help them get stabilized in the community.

Volunteers offer their time in the following areas:

  • Bringing Meals to the families or Life Skills Class meetings that are held once a month.

  • Help with childcare, babysitting and summer camp programs.

  • Car repairs and/or general maintenance.

  • Experience in plumbing, carpentry and electrical wiring.

  • Painting, drywall and minor household repairs.

  • Donation of used appliances, house ware items, dishes, etc.

  • Donation of your used car in good condition.

  • Gift Certificates to K-Mart, Target, Wall-Mart or Lowe's for household items and cleaning supplies.

  • Gift Certificates to Giant, Safeway, BJ’s etc for food items.

We also need items such as furniture, bedding, curtains and more.

Special Donor Opportunities:

You can also provide support through designated gifts:
$20.00 will give the family a pizza/movie outing.
$80.00 will pay childcare while the mother attends classes.
$150.00 pays for books for one semester.
$200.00 will help pay condo fees and utilities.
$350.00 will support college credits for a semester.
$1000.00 will be put toward housing expenses for the family.
These are some of the benefits the families receive made possible by your generosity.

In addition, because of NOVACO’s success over the past three years, the program has been offered a Challenge Grant.  For every dollar put toward housing for a family, an additional dollar will be given through the Challenge Grant.  For every dollar put towards education and services for the families, three dollars will be given.  That’s a guaranteed return on investment!
