Volunteer Opportunities

Northwest Washington, DC

 

RECEPTIONIST/OFFICE ASSISTANT-- Adoption/Foster Care
Answer telephones, greet visitors, update files, data entry, and assist with special projects, such as sending birthday cards or creating photo displays.

TUTOR/MENTOR-- Adoption/Foster Care
Meet with a foster family for a few hours each week to help children with homework assignments.  As available, take a foster teen on outings and other local activities to be a friend and encourage them.

BABY SHOWER COORDINATOR-- Adoption/Foster Care
Work with staff to organize a baby shower for a new foster family. Coordinate logistics, invitations, refreshments, and activities for the party. Most of all, being a friend and encouraging independence Training and support provided.

COMPANION/FRIEND-- Mental Health Services
Visit a client in his/her home for a few hours each week to talk, play games, go for walks, or go shopping. Accompany client on social outings such as movie, library, or special events.

LITERACY TUTOR-- Mental Health Services
Help a client learn to read and write. Tutor and practice reading with the client in their home. Show him/her the resources available in the closest public library and assist him/her with obtaining a library card.

TRANSPORTATION AIDE-- Mental Health Services
Pickup and drive clients to doctor appointments, special group functions, or other meetings.

HOLIDAY EVENT COORDINATOR-- Mental Health Services
Coordinate tree trimming parties, Thanksgiving, or Christmas dinners at the various group homes (Anne Frank House and HOPFED House). Organize food basket preparation and delivery to each of the clients during the holiday times.

APARTMENT PREPARATION-- Mental Health Services
Help with the setup of various apartments for individual clients. Clean apartment, organize furniture for the apartment and arrange for its pickup and delivery, and decorate for a new tenant.

HOUSEWARMING PARTY COORDINATOR-- Mental Health Services
Organize a party for a client who has just moved out on his/her own to a new home. Work alongside Apartment Preparation staff to arrange for appropriate house furnishings and decorations as well as refreshments and for others to join in the welcome.

GARDEN CONSTRUCTION-- Earthkeeping Ministry 
Work with staff and clients to dig beds for new gardens, construct raised beds, trellises, and other garden features.

CHILDREN'S GARDEN COMPANION-- Earthkeeping Ministry 
Join children in the garden and assist them in planting, weeding, harvesting, reading stories about the garden, and/or leading garden-related craft activities.  New gardeners are welcome!  Training can be provided.

HOME GARDEN COMPANION-- Earthkeeping Ministry
Work with LSS/NCA clients in establishing and maintaining a garden at one of many group home sites.  New gardeners are welcome!  Training can be provided.

COMMUNITY GARDEN COMPANION-- Earthkeeping Ministry
Join members of Petworth Collaborative and/or LSS clients in growing food and beautifying the neighborhood around LSS.  New gardeners are welcome!  Training can be provided.
