Northern Virginia

 

READING GROUP-- NOVACO  
Volunteer to read to children on Monday Nights from 6:45 to 7:45 while moms are in classes.  Fairfax.
HANDY PERSON--NOVACO
Volunteer your skills as a carpenter, plumber, electrician to fix units that client families live in.  Fairfax.
MEAL DELIVERY--NOVACO  
Prepare and bring a meal to a family in need.  Fairfax.
TUTOR/MENTOR--Refugee/Immigrant Services
Meet with a family or individual for a few hours each week to help with English and to answer questions about the U.S. At times, assisting with household orientation, opening a bank account, and obtaining a driver's license. Most of all, being a friend and encouraging independence. Training and support provided.  Alexandria and Falls Church locations.
EMPLOYMENT AIDE-- Refugee/Immigrant Services
Lead a refugee along the road to self-sufficiency by providing orientation to the U.S. workplace, looking for job opportunities, conducting practice interviews, and following-up with employers.  Alexandria and Falls Church locations.
INTERPRETER-- Refugee/Immigrant Services
Bosnian, Vietnamese, Somali, Arabic, and Haitian Creole speakers needed to translate for medical appointments and orientations.  Alexandria and Falls Church locations.
SPECIALIST-- Refugee/Immigrant Services
Share specialized skills to help a refugee make their way in their new country. Alexandria and Falls Church locations.
  • Driving Instructor: Help to pass the written and road tests.
  • Bus/Metro Instructor: Assist with bus and metro routes, tickets, schedules, and transfers.
  • Shopping: Provide orientation to understanding unit pricing, comparison shopping, coupons, and budgeting.

  • Transportation: Be available for trips to the doctor, job interviews, social services appointments.

  • Orientation/Acculturation: Teach basic survival skill workshops and explain U.S. culture, customs, and laws.

  • Recreational: Organize social events. Take refugees to museums, parks, concerts, and sporting events.
